I recently saw him in concert in Philadelphia, my first time. I went with a co-worker who has seen him many times. Bruce was so incredible, I feel like I missed out not going to previous concerts! I He is so energetic, it is hard to believe he is as old as he is. I read this post and laughed and told my coworker about it during lunch break. He said he probably would have swooned if he had been that close to Bruce, and he is a straight man! LMAO.

People get with it, she or he is pointing out some of the irony. It is true, having kids inert on the sofa watching a show about kids being outside and active and using their imaginations. Even the biggest fans have to concede that.

I also agree with the basic point hat you must not raise your child in an isolated bubble. I want to be sure that my child grows up knowing that not everyone has a big backyard and nice house and two cars.

I admit I laughed out loud when I read parts of this post, I thought it was witty and written well. Some of the comments made by people being so offended and taking it so seriously made me laugh more. Get real. Or get a sense of humor at least.

For the record I live in a suburb and don't mind the show even when the songs stick in my head. I am annoyed though at how expensive Backyardigan's Live tickets were but that is a whole other issue.

The person who wrote this article has too much time on his or her hands and is overanalyzing things. This is one of the all-time best children's shows. There are a variety of shows out there, each with its own purpose. This show is called The Backyardigans, not the Public Playgroundigans! What's wrong with encouraging creativity and imagination while in the safety of one's own backyard. If The Backyardigans "bug" you so much, then don't watch it! As parents, it is up to us to rear our children, and we shouldn't be relying on TV shows to do this anyway. You say:

"They never have real experiences!" AND
"But this is all good. It contributes to your child being able to navigate such situations as an adult."

Are you serious?? What kinds of experiences do you expect them to have? Let kids be kids and have a childhood. If you do your job as a parent, then children will know how to make the right decisions (though they may not always do so) and deal with different situations. JMHO

I actually find Backyardigans very entertaining. and best is, they teach a lot about different types of music!. thanks to them, my daughter knows what does jazz, rock 'n roll, chacha, bossas..etc, sound like. and with the imagination, my daughter also learns about different places, different occupation...etc. the fact that these kids ONLY play on their backyard, is besides the point. home, is still where kids should still be learning MORE things.

I really dislike LE - they are too 'made up' to be little kids!

Gotta say, I hear what you are all saying about the music. It is catchy - too catchy - I hear those tunes in my mind until I think I am going crazy. But I see ParentZing's perspective and get her humor. All they ever do (or see them do, April) is play in their backyards. I think the point she is making is that in reality kids are watching a show about kids using their imagination instead of using their own imagination and how ironic that is. And I do get what she is saying about kids having experiences where they go to the public playground and play with different kids and how that adds to the growing up experience. I had that growing up and my kids don't, though they do have the expansive backyard with the swingset and all the room to run around and use their imaginations. But the whole neighborhood kids just running out in their backyards to play together? That doesn't happen at least where we live. The kids all go into their own backyards and there's no spontaneous interactions with others like those that happen on playgrounds.

The Backyardigans is the best kids show ever made. If you used YOUR imagination you'd know they have plenty of out of the yard experiences. It's just that we are only privy to their playtime in the backyard.
PS Uniqua is a Uniqua. A unique character. Tasha is a hippo.

Imagine if you ran into him, you'd actually have something to say. You've got it all worked out in your head already about the Springsteen encounter, the sports team bond. And if you ran into The Boss, who knows, you probably will run into Paul, too.

I love Paul Rudd too.Being a mom, it's nice to be able to have a crush on someone who seems just like a nice regular guy, fun dad. I don't need to crush on the crazy, wild young things anymore. Go Paul!

Minimalists may also like the Bentwood Rocker Chair @ Target. And the price! What a bah-gin! Unidentified sources tell me that this is also a good rocker for DWTs (he calls them "Dads with Taste." His terminology, not mine!)

Check it out:

Great ideas. Something else that makes a very useful baby gift for Mom is a really good diaper bag with lots of compartments. My sister in law found some great ones on www.cornerstorkbabygifts.com. Check it out.

Not Fair! There is no way this would happen to me and even if it did I don't know what I would say, probably something stupid or maybe I would just stand and gawk. He is so great and I love how he is so down to earth even though he is such a huge star. Makes you wonder why people like Paris Hilton act so high and mighty when they do nothing and here is Bruce who is truly talented and truly a star and somehow he remains a normal guy.

PS I saw this listed on backstreet.com otherwise I would not have seen the post. I am glad because it is very amusing and well written, it put a smile on my face, especially the end :-) (Get it, the "end").

Of course, I now assume that he's thinking about me as much as I am about him... I am certain he's scouring the faces of the crowds at his concerts, hoping -- nay, praying -- that he catches a glimpse of me. He'd then reach down, pull me up on the stage, and... oh, wait. That was Courtney Cox.

Enjoy!

Having had the privilege of buying the man a beer once to thank him for all those wonderful years of songs from the 'real' America and all the shows I've personally seen (ten and looking forward to more, the first was at The Stone Pony, many long years ago), I can truthfully say that the Boss is just like that. A real, honest, down-to-earth guy who is never too busy to talk to a fan and who usually walks away having also made a friend. (Oh and yeah, the butt, so fine, even after all these years.)

I think there are also plenty of activities and classes for kids. Usually the classes are unique and taught by skilled people. You have to search well. If you are looking for tennis, please see my website www.elftennis.com.

Celebrity stuff (I, too, am embarrassed to admit it) but I also find your "how to" posts useful, particularly the public transit one. We live in a city but not one with a big public transportation system so don't have to think about that on a regular basis. But we did visit New York and I never would have thought ahead of time of things like not wearing shoes that would slip off easily like crocs or making sure I had a backpack or sling so my hands were free.

I hate to say it, but more celeb parent stuff. I look at the other sites, but I like the celeb mom and dad in the city angle.

More of the funny posts. I like the regular articles, but the stuff I like most to read are the hysterical more personal posts like the Bruce Springsteen one. (Is that really a true story?)

Love your site! We live in the city and are always defending ourselves to our family, too. We definitely have more fun and do more stuff than our friends who live in the suburbs, who are very openly jealous of us even if they do have a bigger yard.

Maybe have some more stuff on older kids in the city? Ours are now in elementary school nd junior high.

I like the I Heart City feature you started. It is kind of interesting to get a resident's quick view of what it is like to live in a particular city, it's a different perspective than the usual magazine articles that are written more like a guide book. I also like the shopping bits. Guilty pleasure, but you find really interesting stuff and I am too lazy to look on the computer to find things like that. I would like to see a head-to-head "conversation" between two families, one living in the suburbs one in the city - a funny Q & A type thing.

Thanks for the laughs and info (the public transportation article and the eating out article gave me lots of good suggestions.

EWGer here: Glad you all are thinking along these lines--that's exactly what we'll do in the new year. We're opening up a "store" online where you can order exactly what you want -- maybe we'll do a gift option, not sure yet. The reason we didn't do it for the holiday push was (1) fulfillment would be a nightmare (all those custom bags) and (2) we wouldn't get as many $135 gifts. We earned nearly 1,000 donations at that level, and as a relatively small national non-profit that needs flexible funds (foundation grants usually come with strings attached), individual donations at year's end are really important. So come shopping at www.ewg.org in about mid-January and see what you think.

EWGer here: Glad you all are thinking along these lines–that’s exactly what we’ll do in the new year. We’re opening up a “store” online where you can order exactly what you want — maybe we’ll do a gift option, not sure yet. The reason we didn’t do it for the holiday push was (1) fulfillment would be a nightmare (all those custom bags) and (2) we wouldn’t get as many $135 gifts. We earned nearly 1,000 donations at that level, and as a relatively small national non-profit that needs flexible funds (foundation grants usually come with strings attached), individual donations at year’s end are really important. So come shopping at http://www.ewg.org in about mid-January and see what you think.

That is so cute! And it looks like you get way more stuff than you do in the puppet kits at the regular store. I'm sending the link to "Nanna and Poppy". They missed it for Christmas gifts but my son's birthday is in Janurary and he would love this. I don't know how you find this stuff, when I looked up puppet kits I found really cheap-looking ones from places like Oriental Trading Co so thanks for finding out about this one and posting it.

I like the idea and glad it it tax deductible, but the price seems a little high. (Too out of my league). I wish they offered levels. Maybe a smaller version in something I coudl afford. Maybe $50 level that gives fewer or different gifts in the bag, $30 level (30 is more my wallet-size!). There should still be some gifts they could put in the bag for a $30 in someone;s name right? Or maybe what about this. What if they had a check box of a bunch of gifts and their prices and if you donate $100 you check off the boxes of gifts you want sent to the person whose name you are making the donation in, same for $50 donation and same for $30 or $25 or however much the levels are. That way anyone making donation could customise the gift bag for the person you want it send to.

These are really pretty! Drop earrings in the same style (with the holes) would look really nice, too.

That is such a cool idea! Except with my messy kids, I wonder what the policy is in terms of returning it without any stains. But renting jewelry and a nice purse for a really special event would be awesome. Too bad I don't have any tickets to the inaugural balls.
